Ovarian stimulation (OS) is the controlled administration of medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce mature eggs. OS is usually applied to couples where the woman has irregular menstrual cycles.
Two types of medication are commonly used for OS:
Clomiphene Citrate: This drug is an anti-estrogen and works by stimulating the body to produce more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Higher levels of FSH stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. Clomiphene is usually given at the beginning of the menstrual cycle for five days. Mature eggs are usually released (ovulation) naturally, but ovulation can also be triggered with a single injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Gonadotropins: Medications such as Menopur, Gonal F, and Puregon are usually given daily to stimulate the development of a mature follicle. Again, the mature egg is released from the follicle (ovulation) naturally, or ovulation can be stimulated with a single injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Ultrasound examinations and blood tests are needed to ensure that OS is both safe and effective. Once we have established that you have a mature follicle, you will be given recommendations on the most suitable time for intercourse to help you achieve pregnancy. Usually, couples only need a few months of OS to conceive.
